ABBOTSKERSWELL CRICKET CLUB
Welcome to new players
Winter is always a busy time at cricket clubs as they try to make sure they have the personnel in place for the new season. After gaining promotion to the A Division the first team intend to make a good impression in a highly competitive league. To this end we are pleased to welcome Nick Watkin from Torquay an all-rounder whose experience will be vital to a young side. He will also be the new club coach and encourage all players to raise their game. James Westlake after several successful seasons at Kingsbridge has accepted the challenge of higher level cricket by joining us for 2018. Though Tom Kiely has returned to Australia after contributing significantly on the field last year we are pleased to welcome Sam Johnston to replace him. West Indian British qualified fast bowler Ricky Small-Boyce would like to play for a third season and negotiations are continuing.
The majority of last year’s players are available although some will miss part of the season due to university and exam commitments but there is plenty of enthusiasm around the club. Two teams are playing weekly in the Torbay Indoor League and a net session was held at the Exeter University Cricket School after Christmas. There will be further net sessions in due course and if there are new players who wish to try their hand please contact the Chairman for details:
Paul Mitchell (email@example.com). The Colts manager Geordie Catley has already begun practice sessions for our junior players. So though it is cold and wet outside there is plenty of activity in preparation for the 2018 season.
Overseas Player accommodation request
Sam Johnston our Australian who will come to help us build on our previous success wishes to bring his wife and 2 year old child with him to experience all that Devon and the UK have to offer. As good hosts we need to find somewhere for our guests to stay for 4 months from April through to September. A small house, flat or static caravan would be ideal. We have a small budget and can pay rent for a suitable place. Do you or someone you know have anywhere suitable we could rent for next summer ideally close to Abbotskerswell? If so please contact our Vice Chairman Richard Codd via email (firstname.lastname@example.org).
We have been exploring avenues to upgrade our cricket club facilities but unfortunately several attempts to obtain a sizeable grant towards major refurbishment keep running in to obstacles. While we have a homely club house that has served the community well it is showing signs of wear and tear and the decision has been made to make a start on improvements. The club has obtained smaller grants including from Abbfest for which we are most grateful. Since the new year therefore work has begun on replacing the windows. This is the first in a list of adaptations that will hopefully make the club more fit for purpose and suitable for community use including upgrading insulation and wall finishes inside the clubhouse. If you have a few spare hours why not speak with the Chairman to see how you can help?
we rely heavily on generous sponsors. It is only through the generosity of sponsorship and other support from local businesses, individuals and friends that we are able to continue to run such a thriving, friendly, local club. We are very grateful for any donation you can give. The funds will support our 1st XI, newly promoted to the A Division of the Devon Cricket League together with our 2nd XI and T20 sides plus our Colts teams, many of whose players are already representing us in Devon County Youth cricket. It also enables us to maintain and improve the ground and facilities. Many in the village and local area sponsor match balls or advertising boards. Would you like to join this group? If you are able to provide sponsorship please contact our treasurer Keith Shakesheave (email@example.com) or Paul Mitchell or Richard Codd who will provide you with the necessary details.
